Pre-Departure Checklist: What to Pack and Prepare Before You Fly
2 min read · Updated Aug 2026
Your visa is approved and your offer is confirmed — now comes the practical part of actually getting ready to fly. This checklist covers what most students need to prepare in the final weeks before departure, separate from the visa document checklist itself.
Documents to carry (not just submit)
- Passport with your visa, plus physical and digital copies stored separately from the originals
- Admission/offer letter and any conditional offer confirmation
- Proof of accommodation booking
- Proof of funds or loan sanction letter, in case you're asked at immigration
- Health insurance documents and emergency contact details
- Passport-size photographs, in case any local registration requires them on arrival
What to pack
- Climate-appropriate clothing for your destination's weather during the months you'll arrive, plus at least one season ahead.
- Essential electronics — laptop, chargers, and a universal power adapter for your destination's plug type and voltage.
- A starter supply of any regular medication, along with a doctor's letter or prescription copy if you take anything regularly, since not all medications are available or legal everywhere.
- Limited sentimental/comfort items — moving abroad is a big adjustment, and a few familiar items can help more than you'd expect.
Avoid overpacking clothing and household items you can buy locally — airline baggage limits are strict, and most everyday items are available at your destination.
Before you leave
- Inform your bank about international travel to avoid your cards being blocked for suspicious activity.
- Set up international roaming or research a local SIM/eSIM option for your first days before you can register locally.
- Register with your home country's foreign travel advisory service if one is available, so they can reach you in an emergency.
- Confirm your arrival logistics — who's picking you up, or how you'll get from the airport to your accommodation.
- Make digital backups of every important document (passport, visa, offer letter, insurance) stored somewhere accessible without needing the physical copy.
Your first week checklist
- Register with your university's international student office as soon as possible — this is often required and unlocks student ID, email, and other services.
- Open a local bank account, if you haven't arranged one in advance.
- Register with local authorities if your destination requires it for longer-term visas.
- Locate the nearest pharmacy, grocery store, and your campus health center.
- Save local emergency numbers and your university's international student support contact.
The week before you fly
Give yourself a buffer — don't schedule your flight for the very last possible day before classes start. Arriving a few days early gives you room to recover from jet lag, get oriented, and handle any of the first-week tasks above without the added pressure of also starting classes immediately.
