Choosing Between IELTS, TOEFL, and PTE

IELTS, TOEFL, and PTE all test the same core English skills — reading, writing, listening, and speaking — but they differ in format, delivery, and which universities and countries prefer them. Picking the right one for your situation can save you both time and a retake.

What each test looks like

IELTS (International English Language Testing System) offers both a paper-based and computer-delivered format, and — depending on your test center — the Speaking section is usually conducted face-to-face with a real examiner rather than recorded. IELTS comes in two versions: Academic (for university admissions) and General Training (for migration and some work purposes). Scores are reported on a 9-band scale.

TOEFL iBT (Internet-Based Test) is taken fully on a computer, including the Speaking section, where you record your responses. It's widely accepted at universities in the United States and is scored out of 120, with separate section scores for Reading, Listening, Speaking, and Writing.

PTE Academic (Pearson Test of English) is entirely computer-based, including Speaking, and is known for fast turnaround on results — often within a couple of days. Scoring uses an AI-assisted system alongside human oversight, and results are reported on a 10–90 scale.

Which universities accept which test

Most major English-speaking study destinations — the US, UK, Canada, Australia, and others — accept all three tests, but individual universities and specific programs may have their own preferences or minimum score requirements per section. Always check the exact test and minimum score accepted by each university and program you're applying to rather than assuming — this is one of the most common places applicants make an avoidable mistake.

How to decide which one to take

• Prefer a face-to-face speaking test? IELTS is usually the better fit, since many test centers still offer an in-person Speaking section.
• Comfortable typing quickly and taking a fully digital test? PTE and TOEFL iBT both suit test-takers who are comfortable with a computer-only format.
• Need results fast? PTE generally has the quickest turnaround.
• Applying mainly to US universities? TOEFL iBT has traditionally been the most recognized there, though IELTS and PTE are now accepted by a large and growing number of US institutions too.
• Not sure yet where you'll apply? IELTS and TOEFL both have very broad international recognition, which keeps your options open.

Preparation time

All three tests reward focused, structured preparation more than raw fluency — strategy, timing, and familiarity with question types matter as much as your English level. Most students see solid results with 4–8 weeks of consistent preparation, though this varies by starting level. Full-length mock tests under timed conditions are one of the highest-value things you can do in the final few weeks before your test date.
